【暑期班】生活英语听说(2016暑期班) Unit 6
There are a great many hobbies to choose from. Some people enjoy reading and writing, while others choose to spend their time on swimming and cycling. I have many hobbies, but reading and jogging are my favorite. When I have free time, I often read some famous books. Through reading I can open my mind as well as my heart. Through reading I become more and more knowledgeable. I often jog on the school playgrounds in the early morning. Jogging not only helps me build my body, but also cultivates my perseverance.
My father is a man with wide interests. His favorite pastime is playing weiqi, chess. He often plays chess with his friends in the park, sometimes on the side of the road. Recently, my father taught me how to play Go. Go is a puzzle game that originated in China. It is both a kind of competition and a leisure game in daily life.
My mother is a food lover and crazy about cooking. Without much effort, she can make very delicious meals of different styles. On the weekends or holidays, my parents and I will go to the supermarket to buy some ingredients and seasonings to cook what we like. My father and I will help wash vegetables. Sometimes my mother teaches me some cooking skills. I like to enjoy fine food with my parents in our spare time.
Every year my family will go travelling once or twice and we are very fond of family travelling. For one thing it is exciting to visit different places and get to know the customs of the local people. And for another travelling is one of the best ways to learn.
Teacher: Class is over
Christine: Hey Kevin.
Kevin: Oh! Hi, Christine. Long time no see. How have you been?
Christine: I’ve been great. How about yourself?
Kevin: I mean, I’ve been okay.
Christine: Good! Tell me, do you have any hobbies?
Kevin: Everyone has got hobbies, don't they?
Christine: I guess. What are your hobbies?
Kevin: Well, I like playing guitar and I like singing. I have been doing that since I was little.
Christine: Really? You must be really talented.
Kevin: Umm, no, I am really not that talented. It is just I really like music and it relaxes me. What about you? How do you kill time?
Christine: I really enjoy gardening.
Kevin: Gardening? You, you… It is a bit unusual. You mean like planting and weeding?
Christine: Absolutely! I have a huge garden in my front yard. I have planted roses, and sunflowers, and lilies. The lilies are absolutely my favorite.
Kevin: Ah! That is actually pretty awesome. Your family is really lucky to have such a big yard!
Christine: Yeah, we really are. My parents have used part of the garden as a vegetable patch. And every day we fertilize and weed and water the vegetable patch, so that we can have fresh vegetables.
Kevin: That is great that your family shares your interests. Gardening is a great way to keep your lawn beautiful and stay healthy.
Christine: Absolutely. I love being able to eat fresh vegetables from my garden every day. My friends, all of our friends really, are very jealous.
Kevin: Yeah, you could probably count me in that group. I wish I had a garden.
Liam: These works are fantastic. Do you know who drew them?
Stanley: I have no idea. I also found those works well-done. Liam, are you familiar with Chinese drawing and calligraphy?
Liam: No. This is the first time I have been to a Chinese Art Exhibition. I absolutely love the calligraphy.
Stanley: Yeah, it is amazing. I have started to learn to write with a brush when I was ten.
Liam: Wow. That must be really hard to write with a brush! I bet you are great!
Stanley: I am just a beginner. My dad, he is a professional calligrapher, and he taught me how to write.
Liam: That’s amazing. I'd really love to learn calligraphy actually if I ever got the chance.
Stanley: If you stay here one more year, I could introduce you to my tutor.
Liam: Thank you very much!
Stanley: You are welcome.
Liam: As well as working hard at school and university, it’s really important to have hobbies so that you can spend your spare time. So for example if I am not working or studying, I like to go swimming or I like to play the guitar. Does anyone here have any hobbies? Mike?
Mike: Yes, I like playing basketball and running. I play basketball and go running every day. I just try to keep fit. Also I listen to music when I am under a lot of pressures to relax myself so.
Lily: I really like listening to music and normally do it when I’m drawing. I think drawing can help you relax and you can express yourself with it, so I really like spending my time doing that.
Liam: That's fantastic, and that’s a really good point as well. Hobbies can really help you to relax. Jess and Stanley, do you find that the hobbies you do help you to relax or to stay focused?
Stanley: Yes, my hobby is swimming and when I was little I was always sick, but after I started swimming, I haven’t been sick for two years.
Liam: That’s really good to hear.
Jessica: Yeah. I really enjoy running and reading. I think they provide a really good contrast. I enjoy being active and being out for a run, but then being able to come back and sit down and relax with a good book.
Liam: That’s really true. And all these sound like fantastic ways to spend the weekend.
Corin: So what hobbies do you like?
Susan: I like skiing, swimming, and drawing.
Corin: Eh. That is interesting.
Susan: What is your favorite hobby?
Corin: I like to draw as well. Also I like climbing, ancient history, and building Lego.
Susan: Great! Why do you like climbing?
Corin: I like it because I’m not very good at most sports but with climbing I’m good. Because I can go up, maybe sit there for a bit and then carry on. Why do you like swimming?
Susan: Because I can swim in different ways. I like to stay in the pool. Then why do you like drawing?
Corin: I like drawing because I can make comics and stories. What about you?
Susan: I like drawing because I can draw anything I want to out of my mind. Then why do you like ancient history?
Corin: I like it because we can study how we were in the past and how different it was but also how similar it was too. Why do you like skiing?
Susan: Because I think it’s fun and a little bit dangerous.
Liam: It is nearly the weekend. What do you normally on Saturday and Sunday?
Jessica: Well, first I have to do my homework, but when I finish that I enjoy doing things I like for the rest of my time.
Jessica: Umm, I love reading novels and sometimes I get to go out with my classmates and friends.
Liam: Really? Where do you normally go?
Jessica: Umm, well we like going to the mall and going shopping or going to the cinema and watching some movies.
Liam: Oh wow. My parents normally make me stay in at the weekends. I have to do extra English and maths classes, because they say it's really important that I get good grades so I can go to university. I don't normally go out with my friends too much.
Jessica: Poor guy. My Dad always says that no play and all work makes Jack a dull boy.
Liam: Maybe that’s quite a good point but my parents say that if I don't work hard then I will fall behind at school and I trust what my parents say.
Jessica: I think the most intelligent person is one who knows how to balance work and play.
Liam: That is so true. Maybe I should suggest that to my mom and dad and see what they say. Thank you for the suggestion.
Jessica: That’s okay. Good luck!
Liam: Thank you
Paul: Oh. The game will be over. I’m going to lose. Corin, you are making great progress.
Corin: A good teacher always makes a good student.
Paul: Ha! You need to be modest even though you make good progress.
Corin: I see. Dad, there are so many hobbies. Why did you help me develop this one?
Paul: Well, playing Go has many advantages. How do you feel when you are playing it?
Corin: Every time I play I try to be patient
Paul: Good! But it’s not the whole picture. What else?
Corin: Be patient and concentrate.
Paul: Good! Good! It is easy for a person who can concentrate to be successful. Besides, it also has lots of good effects on the brain.
Paul: And it enhances someone's ability to think, to analyze, and to judge.
Corin: Oh! When I am playing Go, I am doing so many things, thinking analyzing. I didn’t realize that.
Paul: If you realize that you will lose the game. You have to immerse yourself in it and enjoy the process. That is okay.
Corin: Okay. I really enjoy playing Go. Thank you Dad. This is a wonderful game.
Jennifer: Hey, Kirk. How is it going?
Kirk: Hey! I haven’t seen you in ages. What brings you here?
Jennifer: Well, I really want to take up a hobby because I found out that studying all the time makes me so stressed and pressured. I want to do something else that can keep me in a good mood. Have you got any recommendations?
Kirk: Recommendations… Well, I have always loved basketball. I started playing at the age of eight, sixteen years later. I still get a lot out of it.
Jennifer: Wow! You’re a proper veteran then. I wonder how you got started with basketball. Did your parents force you into it? Or was it your own choice?
Kirk: No. Of course. It is my own choice. I think hobbies should always be your own choice. Umm, first you need to think about why you need a hobby. Some people want a hobby to get away from the stress of daily life. Others want to make better use of their free time. How about you?
Jennifer: If I want both what should I do next?
Kirk: Well, you need to figure out what kind of activity you are interested in. For example, I tried a lot of different sports like volleyball and Ping-Pong before I realized that basketball was the right one for me.
Jennifer: That sounds really cool. So with basketball you can play with others and so have fun together.
Kirk: Yeah, exactly. And I also think that hobbies are a great way to become a better person. For example for me and basketball, I’ve become more patient a better teammate and healthier as a result.
Jennifer: That is awesome. Thanks for your advice Kirk. Hobbies I am coming for you!
Cindy: Hi, Jennifer. May I sit here?
Jennifer: Yes. Of course. Go ahead. What can I do for you?
Cindy: Well. I’m going job hunting next month but I am still puzzled about what I want to do with my career and in the future.
Jennifer: Well. Don’t be worried. Basically you still have a long way to go before you need to settle on what to do in life. Umm. Have you got any hobbies?
Cindy: Yes, I love painting. I have always wanted to become an artist. But I think this choice could lead to a very tough life so I don't know which one to choose reality or my dream.
Jennifer: Umm… That is a tough one. You see some people manage to reconcile, their hobbies and their interests, whereas others find it really hard to combine work and play.
Cindy: Umm… then what do you recommend?
Jennifer: It is hard to say. You see when you are looking for a job, it is important that you know yourself well inside out. For example, your personality, your expectations, your hobbies and your circumstances. You need to take all of these into consideration, before taking the plunge
Cindy: Emmm. I’ll definitely keep that in mind. Thank you for all your advice and your help, Jennifer. It was great talking to you.
Jennifer: No worries. I wish you all the best!
How have you been
I'm great I was just playing
basketball with my friends
and I was practising my calligraphy
That sounds wonderful
Let's talk about hobbies
in different countries
Of course People should choose things
they're interested in
so it maybe be the same or different
in different countries
But today let's look at some
popular hobbies in other countries
Have you ever heard of surfing
you stand on top of a long board
and rise up and down the waves
In some places in Australia
and the United States
surfing is very popular
but you need to live by
the beach to do it
But it is great exercise
and a lot of fun
It is a lot harder than it looks though
so you'll need to practice a lot
Well I love sports so
I would like to try surfing
I'd like to try something a little bit more relaxing
something that I can do with my
Well in that case
how about a game of bingo
It is easy to play and popular
with retired people
It works a bit like a small lottery
but when you win you have to stand up
and shout bingo
I'd prefer something more active
I don't like sitting still
Well if you are really tough
you could try American football
American football is the No.1 sport
in the United States
and rugby is very popular in
the United Kingdom
Australia and New Zealand
The rules are bit different
but you need to be very strong
to play both sports
They can be a bit dangerous
so watch out
Those sports look too dangerous
I don't think that I want to try
I love listening to music
Well many teenagers like listening to
rock music and they may even form
their own rock bands
All you need is three or more people
One person to play the guitar
One person to play the bass guitar
and one person for the drums
Usually the guitarist will also the singer
but sometimes another person may sing
Some of the most famous rock bands
in the world started when they were
teenagers in highschool
Yeah That sounds much more like my style
Would you like to join me in the new rock band
I'd love to but I don't have any musical talent
I think I will stick to basketball
Well whatever you decide to do it is important
to find something you really love doing
so if you don't have a hobby that you really love yet
Why not try one of the ones we talked about today
